Biography

Bhai-Dhawa Sesay is a Sierra Leonean author, technologist, media entrepreneur, cultural producer, and civic thinker whose Five C Theory emerged from four decades of political engagement, diaspora involvement, public communication, and repeated observation of Sierra Leonean institutional life.

Born and raised in Sierra Leone, Sesay attended Magburaka Secondary School for Boys before enrolling at Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone. He studied Geology and Chemistry and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1986. Later that year, at the age of twenty-six, he relocated to the United States.

His early life in Sierra Leone exposed him to the complex relationships among family obligation, respect for elders, personal connections, political loyalty, public responsibility, citizenship, and corruption. He became increasingly interested in the way conduct that might otherwise be understood as favoritism or misuse of authority could be defended as culture, respect, gratitude, or loyalty to one’s people.

After arriving in the United States, Sesay pursued his interest in technology. In 1989, he earned a diploma in computer studies from the Programming and Systems Institute in Silver Spring, Maryland. He went on to build a career in software development, website development, digital publishing, web hosting, and online communication. In 2020, he earned a Master of Distance Education and E-Learning from the University of Maryland Global Campus.

Sesay is the chief executive officer of Leone Connect and the chief technology officer of Leone Host. Leone Connect Publishing, which publishes his books, operates as a division of Leone Connect. He also remains the owner and operator of Sierra Leone Live, the online news and information platform he founded in 1999.

Sierra Leone Live was created during a period when reliable online information about Sierra Leone was difficult to obtain. During the civil war and its aftermath, the platform helped circulate news and connect Sierra Leoneans at home and across the diaspora.

Sesay’s interests and professional work also extend into television, music, photography, video production, and cultural programming. He continues to operate active recording, photography, and video-production businesses in the United States.

In October 2010, he created, owned, and produced Usabi Dance, Sierra Leone’s first modern-day reality television show. Produced in partnership with the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation, the program worked with young performers from across the country and created a national platform for discovering and celebrating dance talent.

From October 2025 through June 2026, Sesay again lived and worked in Sierra Leone. During that period, he collaborated with the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs as producer of the inaugural One Nation Reggae Festival, held from November 25 through November 30, 2025. The principal reggae concert took place on November 28.

The festival was conceived as a cultural bridge between Sierra Leone and the Caribbean, particularly Jamaica, highlighting their shared historical and cultural roots. Sesay worked with Jamaican performers, Sierra Leonean musicians, Reggae Union Sierra Leone, and more than fifty reggae artists during the selection and production process.

His experience also includes years of involvement in Sierra Leonean political communication, civic advocacy, campaign technology, organizational leadership, and democratic debate. He does not currently hold membership or a position in a political party.

His experience inside political and civic environments helped shape one of the central questions behind The Five C Theory: Why does replacing political leadership so often fail to change the practices, loyalties, and institutional habits surrounding power?

Sesay began developing the Five C framework during the early 2000s. By approximately 2008, its five-part structure—Culture, Corruption, Citizenship, Contentment, and Complacency—had taken clearer form.

Over the following years, he discussed the theory publicly, wrote about it in Sierra Leonean forums and online groups, conducted research, and tested its ideas through conversations with citizens, professionals, activists, artists, political participants, public servants, and members of the diaspora.

In 2023, Leone Connect Publishing digitally published and privately distributed his book Echoes of Democracy: Unrigging Sierra Leone’s Elections. He is also developing Echoes of Democracy: Unrigging Sierra Leone’s Elections, Second Edition, an expanded examination of electoral integrity, democratic practice, and the continuing challenges facing Sierra Leone’s political system.

His next book, Artificial Intelligence and Sierra Leone’s Future, is scheduled for publication in 2027. Drawing upon his decades of experience in computing, web development, digital communication, media, and distance education, the book examines the opportunities and risks artificial intelligence presents for Sierra Leone.

It considers how the country might approach education, employment, entrepreneurship, governance, public services, cultural preservation, technological access, and national development during a period of rapid technological change.

Sesay’s seven-month stay in Sierra Leone from 2025 to 2026 became the final turning point in the development of The Five C Theory. Decades after his earliest observations, he continued to hear many of the same public frustrations, political arguments, and institutional concerns. He concluded that the framework could no longer remain an unfinished idea.

The result is The Five C Theory: Culture, Corruption, Citizenship, Contentment, and Complacency in Sierra Leone.

Sesay writes from the perspective of someone who has lived both inside and outside Sierra Leone, participated in political and cultural institutions, built media and technology platforms, and worked with Sierra Leoneans across generations, professions, and national borders.

His argument is critical without being dismissive of Sierra Leonean culture. He believes that the country’s strongest values—including family responsibility, loyalty, faith, creativity, communal care, dignity, endurance, and resilience—can become resources for stronger citizenship and more accountable public institutions.

Together, his books reflect three connected areas of concern: the integrity of Sierra Leone’s democracy, the cultural and institutional forces shaping public life, and the technological choices that will influence the country’s future.

Bhai-Dhawa Sesay lives in Bowie, Maryland, with his family. He is married and the father of four grown sons.
